Wikipedia was slightly off on the legend. The wendigo was what was called a lost soul. It would happen when a warrior or tribe member ate another human to save himself over the long winters. A wendigo was believed to be the symbol of the dangers of selfishness. Because the legend stated that the wendigo was a cannibal in life it would still want to consume flesh after death. There is actually something called wendigo fever which is where someone who carried the urge to eat human flesh. Once a man ate another human and blamed the wendigo and claimed that it made him. I suppose since this is considered an evil entity it could be completely possible. It is said the wendigo cleverly chose its victim. This one would be the weakest. It then would so said stalk the victim making him or her feel anxious and unhappy all the time. This would grow till the wendigo would kill them or they committed suicide. As I said before, the wendigo was a lost soul. It was told that if a person became cannibalistic for any reason they would suffer a fate worse than death, this was becoming a wendigo and hurting their own tribe. Their appearance ranged wildly by the story but the most consistent was that they had really long manlike limbs and usually had a stags head and was sometimes hunched over with the bones pushing out through the ashy skin. Fully depended on the tribe you talked to and their belief of it. It was a truly terrifying story long ago but now it is seen by most as just that, a story. But all stories have to start somewhere
